Olympians react positively to reported IOC policy protecting women's sports categories

Several Olympic medalists expressed support for a reported update to International Olympic Committee (IOC) policies aimed at preventing biological males from competing in women's events starting with the 2028 Los Angeles Games, according to Fox News Digital.

Kaillie Humphries, a bobsledder who won Olympic gold medals for Canada in 2010 and 2014 and for the United States in 2022,[1] called it "a great day for women’s sports" and a measure to ensure fair competition through sex testing.[2]

Donna de Varona, a two-time Olympic gold medalist swimmer for the United States at the 1964 Tokyo Games,[3] praised the decision as based on science and fairness, noting the influence of IOC leadership including Kirsty Coventry.

Gary Hall Jr., an American swimmer with five Olympic gold medals including a shared gold in the 50m freestyle at Sydney 2000,[4] stated the ruling supports women's rights while allowing transitioned athletes to compete in men's events.

MyKayla Skinner, who won a silver medal in vault at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics,[5] described the news as "the best news! About time!"

Nancy Hogshead-Makar, a three-time Olympic gold medalist swimmer from the 1984 Los Angeles Games and advocate for sex-based categories in sports,[6] affirmed the announcement upholds inclusion by directing athletes to their sex category.

Martina Navratilova, 18-time Grand Slam singles champion and vocal advocate on sex-based rights in sports, welcomed the IOC's recognition that sex matters in Olympic competition.[7]
